Getting Started with the Disability Tax Credit

Getting approved for the Disability Tax Credit (or DTC for short) and making the most of your approval can be challenging, so we’ve broken it down into three steps:

Applying for the DTC

To apply for the Canadian Disability Tax Credit, begin by completing Part A of form T2201, providing your personal information. Then, have a qualified medical practitioner complete Part B of the T2201, certifying the impairment. Finally, submit the completed application to the Canada Revenue Agency, who will then assess your eligibility.

If you would like assistance with this process, please message us on our contact page. While we do not specialize in the application process, we have colleagues who do, we would be happy to refer you.

Tax Refunds

The CRA often approves applicants for the DTC for prior years. This means your taxes can be adjusted to include the DTC and sometimes some other related credits. This is where Tax Cats can help. We specialize in helping families get the most out of their DTC refunds.

To enlist our help, please follow the instructions in the video at the top of this page. Once done, we will review your file, usually within a couple of business days. The review is completely free. We will be in touch as soon as possible to provide you with a refund estimate and our fee to complete the work for your refunds.

Open a Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP)

Once you or your child has been approved for the DTC, you have the ability to open an RDSP. This is an often overlooked benefit offered to anyone approved for the DTC, but it is extremely valuable. Everyone who has been approved for the DTC, and who is under the age of 49, should open an RDSP. While an RDSP can be opened with most major banks, we have a list of specialists that we can get you in touch with.

If you would like assistance with the RDSP, reach out via our contact page.
